![]() ![]() The lower-end, digital-only Xbox Series S, which has reduced specifications and does not include an optical drive, was designed to nominally render games in 1440p at 60 FPS, with support for 4K video scaling and ray tracing. ![]() Xbox Series X was designed to nominally render games in 2160p ( 4K resolution) at 60 frames per second (FPS). Both models have solid-state drives to reduce loading times, support for hardware-accelerated ray-tracing and spatial audio, the ability to convert games to high-dynamic-range rendering using machine learning (Auto HDR), support for HDMI 2.1 variable refresh rate and low-latency modes, and updated controllers. Like the Xbox One, the consoles use an AMD 64-bit x86-64 CPU and GPU. On September 8, 2020, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Series S. Microsoft teased Anaconda in June 2019 during E3 2019 and unveiled it as the Xbox Series X during The Game Awards in December. In early 2019, rumors emerged of a fourth generation of Xbox consoles (codenamed "Scarlett") that consisted of a high-end model ("Anaconda") and a lower-end model ("Lockhart"). Released on November 10, 2020, the higher-end Xbox Series X and lower-end Xbox Series S are part of the ninth generation of video game consoles, which also includes Sony's PlayStation 5, released the same month. The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are, collectively, the fourth generation of the Xbox series of home video game consoles developed and sold by Microsoft. Like a computer, the PS5 needs to breathe, so placing the console in a place where the hot air has nowhere to go isn't a good idea – you'll run the risk of overheating the unit. All Xbox One games and select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games Outside of what Gamers Nexus observed, it's worth mentioning that PS5 owners can help reduce heating concerns by playing their console in a location where airflow isn't restricted. I'm sure that updated versions of the PS5 will feature some sort of revision that changes this. The memory running warm is concerning and is a sign that Sony does have some work to do regarding cooling the console. But we're still early into the console's life, and these heating concerns could become an issue later down the road. For now, I haven't heard of any PlayStation 5's having issues due to overheating issues. How this plays out over time is anyone's guess. It's been immensely quieter than my experience with the PlayStation 4 Pro, a console that sounded like a jet taking off anytime I fired up a demanding game. I doubt that the company would release a console that has been so eagerly anticipated without doing due diligence to ensure that the console or its components wouldn't fail due to heat issues, but it might need to take a second look at the design.Īs an owner of the PlayStation 5, I can attest that even after many hours of Demon's Souls, the console has remained cool to the touch, and I haven't noticed any loud noises. I'm sure that Sony is aware of the results that Gamers Nexus has brought to light and has conducted many tests on their own. While this was never proven and Sony doesn't respond to rumors, the results of the recent testing are alarming. ![]() Interestingly enough, before the launch of the PlayStation 5, there were rumors that Sony had an issue cooling the console. ![]()
